Cafe Furniture: Complete Setup Guide

How to select and budget furniture for a cafe from 30 to 100 seats — format, materials and real project numbers.

A cafe is not a smaller restaurant. It operates differently: guests arrive alone or in pairs, stay longer, combine work with coffee, and expect a certain informality that a formal restaurant seating arrangement actively destroys. The furniture decisions that work in a restaurant often fail in a cafe. We have fit out PROCOFFEE Dostyk in Almaty, Cozy Cafe in Aktau and a dozen other cafes. Here is what we have learned.

Identify Your Format First

Express (takeaway-focused): high bar stools at the counter, minimal table seating, focus on throughput. Everything should be quick to clean and compact. Work and meet: larger tables, power outlets, ergonomic chairs that support longer stays. This is the format most specialty coffee shops chase. Atmosphere cafe: design-first, Instagram corners, a soft seating zone, natural materials. At Cozy Cafe in Aktau the brief was the second format: bar stools at the window, 2-4-person dining tables in the centre, a sofa zone against the back wall.

Chair and Stool Selection

Cafe chairs should be lightweight (4-5 kg), stackable and easy to clean. Faux leather or Martindale 50,000+ fabric upholstery is non-negotiable — fabric absorbs coffee spills; you will be replacing it within a year. At Cozy Cafe we specified 4.2 kg chairs — one-hand moveable, which means staff can rearrange the floor in under five minutes. Bar stools for window or counter seating: height 65-75 cm depending on counter height. Always measure the counter before ordering the stools.

Table Selection

For cafes: 60×60 cm square or 60-70 cm round tables are the most efficient. Larger tables get occupied by solo guests in peak hours and block revenue. Standard height 74 cm. Tables should be light enough for one person to carry — this matters every time you rearrange for a private booking or deep clean. A good HPL-top with metal base at 70×70 cm weighs 12-15 kg. That is the target.

The Sofa Zone

A well-designed soft seating zone keeps guests on average 25-40 minutes longer than a hard chair — which means at least one additional order per visit. Minimum foam density: 40 kg per cubic metre. Lower density collapses within 6-12 months of commercial use and looks exactly as bad as it sounds. The sofa zone should be 15-25% of total floor area. More than that and table turnover drops enough to hurt revenue.

Budget for a 40-Seat Cafe (Almaty, 2026)

Bar stools 10 units: 350,000-700,000 Tenge. Dining chairs 20 units: 500,000-1,000,000 Tenge. Tables 10 units: 400,000-800,000 Tenge. Sofas and lounge chairs 5-6 units: 400,000-1,000,000 Tenge. Total: 1.65-3.5 million Tenge. The wide range reflects the gap between mid-range Turkish production and European premium. For most Almaty independent cafes, the mid-range budget delivers the right quality for the investment.

FAQ: Cafe Furniture

Standard stock colours are available immediately from our Almaty warehouse.
