How to Choose Restaurant Furniture: 7 Essential Criteria

Durability, ergonomics and style: what to look for when purchasing HoReCa furniture for your venue.

Opening a restaurant is not just about the concept and the menu. The furniture shapes the first impression before a guest even opens the drinks list. Mistakes here are expensive: a low-quality chair lasts a year, an uncomfortable one drives away half your guests. At SANDALUCI we have worked on hundreds of HoReCa projects across Kazakhstan. Here are the seven criteria we use ourselves.

1. Durability and Wear Resistance

Restaurant furniture operates under conditions that are hard to imagine at home. A chair in a busy venue may be sat on and stood up from 200 times per day. When fitting out Aulet Restaurant in Shymkent with 120 seats, we chose welded steel frames 2 mm thick. After two years of heavy use, not one piece was sent for repair. Key point: wooden frames must be beech or ash — never MDF.

2. Upholstery Material

For restaurants the best choice is faux leather or Martindale 50,000+ cycle treated fabric. Both wipe clean, do not absorb odours and withstand frequent sanitiser use. At PROCOFFEE Almaty the client initially chose genuine leather — within eight months a third of the upholstery had to be replaced. Genuine leather looks beautiful but in daily intensive use it deteriorates quickly.

3. Ergonomics

Seat height for dining chairs: 45-48 cm. Seat depth: at least 42 cm, otherwise guests perch on the edge and feel discomfort within 20 minutes. Backrest angle: 95-100 degrees balances comfort with not encouraging guests to overstay. Bar stools: seat height 65-75 cm for a bar counter at 100-110 cm. Always verify this ratio before ordering.

4. Concept Fit

Furniture is part of a venue visual language. For Phoenix Swisshotel Almaty the brief was "modern classic with warmth" — we selected dark walnut frames and beige-toned upholstery. Define your venue in three words first; that filter will eliminate the wrong choices instantly.

5. Weight and Mobility

Lightweight chairs (under 5 kg) suit transformable rooms and banquets. For terraces, powder-coated aluminium is the right call for Kazakhstan climate — it handles from -30 degrees in winter to +40 degrees in summer without deforming.

6. Stackability

Stackable chairs (6-8 per stack) save storage space and simplify room transitions. At Ziyafet in Almaty stackable chairs freed up 40 square metres when converting the hall for banquets.

7. Warranty and Supplier Service

Reliable manufacturers offer 2-3 years on the frame and 1 year on upholstery. At SANDALUCI we keep fabric and hardware stock for every project for 3 years so clients can reorder matching pieces.
